POLAND DIVIDED INTO 16 NEW PROVINCES

Poland (1947 - 1998) was administered locally through a system of 49 provinces; each province is named after the town from which it is administered. Provinces are divided into towns and communes and are administered by local governors and provincial assemblies. Members of the provincial assemblies are chosen by elected councils representing the towns and communes.

On July 27, 1998, the president of Poland A. Kwasniewski signed into law a bill dividing Poland into 16 new provinces, instead 49 provinces. Portions of Elblag, Olsztyn, Suwalki and Ostroleka are incorportated into the new province of Warmia-Mazury. The capital of this new province is the city of Olsztyn.

My ancestors came from West Prussia to the United States in 1891
